A Pioneer in Women's Medical Education
Lady Hardinge Medical College (LHMC), located in the heart of New Delhi, stands as a testament to the vision of one remarkable woman — Lady Hardinge of Penhurst, wife of Baron Charles Hardinge, the then Viceroy of India. Recognising the dire need for a dedicated medical college for women in a society where co-educational institutions were unwelcome to many families, she channelled her efforts to raise funds from princely states and the public to bring this dream to life.
The foundation stone of this historic institution was laid on 17th March 1914. Tragically, Lady Hardinge passed away later that same year, and on the suggestion of Queen Mary, the college and hospital were named after her to perpetuate the memory of its founder. The institution was formally opened by Lord Hardinge on 17th February 1916 with just 16 students and 80 beds.
Today, LHMC is governed and funded by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, and has functioned as a constituent of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Delhi, since 1950. It has grown from a modest establishment into one of India's most respected and distinguished public medical institutions, offering undergraduate, postgraduate, and super-specialty medical programmes of the highest calibre.
"The unique distinction of being the only medical college in India exclusively training women undergraduate students — LHMC is where history and healing intertwine."
— Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of DelhiWhile originally established exclusively for women, LHMC began admitting male postgraduate students in 1970, and undergraduate male students joined in 1991. However, the institution's identity remains deeply rooted in its mission to empower women in medicine and serve the underserved communities of Delhi and beyond. The college alumni — proudly known as Hardonians — are spread across India and internationally, many occupying the highest positions in medicine, public health, and governance.

A Journey Through History
From a modest beginning with 16 students and 80 beds, Lady Hardinge Medical College has grown through decades of transformation into one of India's foremost medical institutions.
The foundation stone of Lady Hardinge Medical College was laid on 17th March 1914 by Lady Hardinge herself. The institution was initially named Queen Mary College & Hospital to commemorate Queen Mary's historic visit to India in 1911–12. Sadly, Lady Hardinge passed away later that very year, and at Queen Mary's suggestion, the college was renamed in her honour — ensuring her vision would be remembered by generations of students who trained within its walls.
The college was formally opened on 17th February 1916 by Lord Hardinge, Viceroy of India, admitting its first batch of 16 women students. Dr. Kate Platt served as the institution's first Principal. Initially affiliated with Punjab University, students appeared for final examinations at King Edward Medical College, Lahore. The nursing training school also commenced this year with 11 probationers annually, laying the foundation of what would become a full-fledged nursing college.
Pre-medical science departments were closed, reducing the total duration of the MBBS programme from 7 years to 5 years — aligning the course structure with evolving national medical education standards and making the programme more accessible and efficient for aspiring women doctors across India.
A landmark year in the college's history — LHMC became affiliated with the University of Delhi, marking its formal integration into independent India's premier academic ecosystem. Post-graduate courses followed in 1954 with affiliation to Punjab University, and subsequently to the University of Delhi in 1956, enabling students to pursue advanced degrees in various medical specialties.
On 17th March 1956, Kalawati Saran Children's Hospital (KSCH) was established as a centre of excellence in pediatric care and research, attached to LHMC. The hospital now has 377 beds and houses the largest neonatal wing in Delhi with 84 dedicated beds, serving thousands of children annually from Delhi and neighbouring states. The Indo-Japan New Block further augmented its medical facilities in subsequent years.
In 1970, LHMC opened its postgraduate programmes to both male and female students. Following the spirit of India's evolving educational policies, male students were also admitted to the undergraduate (MBBS) programme from 1991 onwards, while the college retained its historic commitment to empowering women in medicine through its exclusively women undergraduate intake in certain reserved categories.
The nursing training school, which began in 1916 with 11 probationers and was later expanded to accommodate 50 students annually, was significantly upgraded to a full-fledged College of Nursing in 2007. Today it offers a 4-year B.Sc. (Hons.) Nursing programme, contributing trained nursing professionals to India's healthcare ecosystem.
In the 2024 National Institutional Ranking Framework assessment, Lady Hardinge Medical College was ranked 29th among all medical colleges in India, with a score of 57.80 — a reflection of its sustained commitment to academic excellence, clinical training, and medical research spanning over a century. This ranking reflects performance across teaching, learning, research, outreach, and perception metrics.
